Next month's shrimp dinner helps fund football team

Geneva's a town that likes its good food.

Besides all the scrumptious offerings at candy shops, restaurants, bakeries, delis and specialty shops, there's Festival of the Vine's Flavor Fare with its garlic crab pasta, the lingonberry floats and Swedish ham sandwiches at Swedish Days, the pepparkakor and handmade candy canes at the Christmas Walk, the pork chop sandwiches at Kane County Cougars games … oh, and the fresh organic produce and meat at the Geneva Green Market, and the Polish pastries at the French Market ... where was I?

This even extends to fundraisers, as evidenced by the latest press release to cross my computer:

"THE SHRIMP BOAT LANDS AT GENEVA HIGH SCHOOL."

Yes, you can enjoy a tasty crustacean dinner while helping the Geneva High School football team.

The carry-out dinner is available from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 7 at the school. Each $10 dinner includes six jumbo shrimp with dipping sauce, baked potato with sour cream, coleslaw, a roll with butter, and a mint. Viking players deliver the dinners to cars at the entrance in front of the gym on McKinley Street.

Proceeds help buy practice gear, video equipment, uniforms and other items that aren't included in the regular school budget.

To order dinner tickets, call (630) 463-3929.

And don't forget: The "Pasta for Posies" spaghetti dinner is Feb. 27, to raise money for the Geneva Beautification Committee. They plant the flowers in more than 50 beds downtown. The dinner is from 5 to 8 p.m. at Riverview Banquets on Route 25 in Batavia. Tickets are $5 for kids and $10 for adults. For tickets, call (630) 208-9453.

Garbage scraps

When discussing what kind of garbage, brush and recycling contracts the city may want to sign this year, an alderman brought up an old question.

Namely, there's a store in his ward that sells garbage stickers, and that retailer would like to levy a surcharge for doing so, saying selling the stickers at cost (as required by city law) actually costs him money.

Years ago, Geneva used to allow retailers to tack a 2-cent handling fee on to the price of a garbage sticker.

But officials Monday night were not inclined to let them do that again. Retailers aren't required to sell the stickers, said the mayor, and selling the stickers brings people into the store, where they may buy something else -- "whether it be a Snickers bar or a six-pack -- of cola."

Keep that heart happy

Did you know you can get a free heart health screening at Delnor-Community Hospital? "Know Your Heart Health" offers a finger-stick blood test for cholesterol, glucose and other measures, plus a counseling session on how you can make those numbers better. Call Community Education at (630) 208-3999 to make an appointment. The next date is Tuesday, followed by one on Feb. 28, then a bunch the rest of the spring.
