This 'Painted Lady' must be preserved

In my opinion, tearing down the "Painted Lady" at 95 S. Gilbert St. in South Elgin for any reason is not an option. That house was once the dwelling place of one of our city fathers. It is part of the village's heritage. We have less than a dozen of these houses still standing and they should be preserved.

Chicago has a preservation organization which conducts walking tours of significant houses. Does anyone miss the Potter Palmer castle/mansion or the railroad magnate's home in Pullman? Both were razed.

Such house tours could some day be part of bringing interest to our village. I believe historic preservation is important to any town. It gives character and understanding of the town..
