Immigrant won't be deported yet

Congressman Dan Lipinski says a widowed illegal immigrant from France who cared for her paralyzed husband for 14 years on Chicago's South Side has gotten a one-year stay of deportation.

Lipinski says the move gives federal immigration officials more time to investigate Corina Turcinovic's case.

Turcinovic had been detained and was on her way to the airport last month when she got the news that she would not immediately be deported. Lipinski has introduced a bill that could grant Turcinovic permanent resident status.

Turcinovic says she's relieved and grateful for the yearlong reprieve.

She overstayed her visa while caring for her husband. He was struck by a vehicle on a visit to the United States.
