East play a singular sensation for cast
Fighting for a spot in a Broadway chorus line is not for the faint of heart.
Just ask Paul, who falls during the audition with a career ending injury. Or Cassie, who must rehearse for a lesser role than she deserves before her former lover just to get work.
The drama of it all -- not to mention the spectacular songs -- launched "A Chorus Line" to multiple Tony Awards in the 1970s.
Now, experiencing a revival on Broadway, the musical captures the glitz and spectacular dancing on the nation's theatrical stage.
Students at Glenbard East High School will present the musical locally this weekend. The play starts at 7:30 p.m. today through Saturday at the school, 1014 S. Main St., Lombard
It's a play that gives a lot of students the opportunity to participate since the Glenbard East cast includes 28 parts.
Seventeen candidates, or "gypsies" as career chorus line members are called, show up for an audition and get more than they bargained for. The director wants them not only to dance, but to share with him and everyone else, something of their past.
As the group gets winnowed down, and the stories and songs unfold, they seamlessly blend into the nameless, faceless mass that makes up a superb background chorus line.
