Community responds to call for powdered baby formula

Responding to a desperate need for powdered baby formula, volunteers from the Volunteer Center of Northwest Suburban Chicago recently finished up the Baby Shower Project, which they started in conjunction with their celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

Volunteers collected more than $2,000 to buy the powdered baby formula and received donations of more than 50 cans of formula, 1,100 disposable diapers, about 8,000 baby wipes and several bottles of baby lotion.

Last week, employees of Washington Mutual met at the offices to sort, package and prepare the donations for distribution. Yvonne Gardner from the Society for Preservation of Human Dignity Counseling Center came by to pick up the donations. PHD is a pregnancy counseling center.

Several groups helped The Volunteer Center collect the donations, including Olive-Mary Stitt Elementary School, Our Lady of the Wayside School, Thomas Middle School, St. Scholastica School, NEC Display Solutions, PepsiAmericas employees, and numerous individuals and families in the community. Meijer, Sam's Club and Target donated gift certificates.
