Warren 76, Antioch 46
It was Senior Night, but it was junior Brandon Paul who led the way, as host Warren's boys basketball team romped over Antioch 76-46 in a North Suburban Conference crossover on Friday.
Paul scored 10 points in the first quarter and led all scorers with 21 points, including three 3-pointers.
"We came out real slow, but then picked up our defense," Paul said.
After losing to Evanston 72-49 last Saturday, the Blue Devils wanted to have a good week and did that by winning two games.
"We practiced pretty well this week," said Warren coach Chuck Ramsey, whose Blue Devils beat Libertyville 60-44 on Tuesday. "It's a matter of concentration with us, being able to play possession by possession.
"Obviously, Evanston is a lot better team than Libertyville or Antioch so the competition has a lot to do with that, too," Ramsey said. "We're a work in progress. This is a young team in that tonight we started only one senior and other nights we don't start any seniors."
Also for Warren, junior David Duncan added 10 points, underclassmen Dana Jackson and Matt Dickson, both of whom were called up to the varsity this past week, scored 8 points apiece. Kegan McDaniel, one of four seniors honored before the game, added 7 points.
The other seniors honored were Eric Williams, Scott Geske and Jason Warneke.
"Warneke played very well for us at the point," Ramsey said. "Geske came in off the bench and had a nice stretch for us, McDaniel came off the bench and had a nice stretch for us in the second quarter, and Williams also came of the bench and played a nice game for us down the stretch."
Warren built an 18-8 first-quarter lead, then started the second with an 8-2 run to lead 45-17 at halftime.
Warren (12-9) shot 27-of-62 for 44 percent, while Antioch (1-21) shot 16-of-47 for 32 percent from the floor.
Lamarr Pottinger led Antioch with 17 points, including 9 in the second half. Mike Powell scored 14 points and Austin Grimm scored 11.
"In the beginning of the game, we were winning," Antioch coach Mike Skinner said. "Our problem all year has been that we can't finish games. Coming into a place like Warren, the guys looked up at the scoreboard and were like this can't be true and then went into submissive mode."
