Riverside-Brookfield 74, Fenton 50
Having played against Riverside-Brookfield guard Chris Parrish for four years, Fenton's boys basketball has seen him light up the scoreboard in a hurry.
The Bison played tight defense on Parrish, who will play at Southern Illinois next year, and got him into foul trouble, which limited his impact on the outcome of Friday's boys basketball game.
But that didn't matter for the Bulldogs, who have plenty of other weapons to fuel their high-octane offense. They rolled to a 74-50 victory over Fenton in Metro Suburban Conference play.
Riverside-Brookfield guard Dan Oswald poured in 14 of his 17 points in the first quarter, including three 3-pointers. Guard Sean McGonagill was also a catalyst with 19 points, while forward Shane Kilcoyne added 10 points. Parrish, who averages more than 20 points per game, finished with only 9 points, but that didn't bother Bulldogs coach Tom McCloskey.
"I thought we played one of our best offensive games of the year," McCloskey said. "We had good balance on the inside and on the outside."
"They have some nice weapons without Chris," said Fenton coach Dennis Cromer. "They get credit for some of the shots they took and were able to put in."
The Bulldogs (15-8, 6-2) like to push the ball quickly up the court to score a lot while the Bison would like to play at a bit slower pace. Fenton had trouble keeping up, especially with standout forward Damian Sieradzki, who was unable to play.
It was Sieradzki who led the Bison (10-12, 4-3) to a big win the last time the two teams met Jan. 18 in Bensenville. The senior scored 41 points -- the second-most points in Fenton history -- as the Bison captured a 84-73 overtime victory.
"We didn't play well enough that with or without him, we would have been successful," Cromer said. "I wasn't pleased with how well we played in total. But if you take a person out of your lineup who is averaging 19.8 points a game and 8 rebounds a game, it is going to have an impact."
Fenton got a strong game from senior guard Gozie Umeadi, who scored 8 of his 19 points in the first quarter when the Bison trailed only 24-18. Post player Billy Gratzl made his presence known around the basket and even sank a pair of 3-pointers to finish with 14 points.
"We knew we had to stop Gozie," McCloskey said. "He is a great player."
The Bulldogs ramped it up to lead 40-24 at halftime and then pulled ahead 58-35 with eight minutes to play.
