Wrap: Fremd comeback topples Storm

The Fremd girls basketball team gave South Elgin several opportunities to put it away Thursday night.

The Storm didn't take advantage and it cost them a nonconference victory.

Fremd rallied for a 10-point deficit with 10 minutes remaining to earn a 48-41 victory in South Elgin.

"I'm proud of (the players off the bench). They just turned them over," Fremd coach David Yates said. "There was a five-possession span and we were back in the game. After that, everybody else followed suit."

South Elgin, which didn't make a field goal outside of 3 feet in the first half, opened the second half with a 3-pointer from Genevieve Johnson to take a a 24-17 lead.

Fremd turned the ball over on its first seven possessions of the third quarter, but never trailed by more than 11 points. The Storm led 28-17 with 3:40 remaining in the third after Courtney Kumerow, who dominated inside most of the game, grabbed two offensive rebounds and converted the second one for a basket.

"We just never capitalized," Storm coach Tim Prendergast said. "Our offense kind of shut down."

Kaitlin Jones finally got the Vikings (16-10) going. The senior scored on a 3-point play, had a steal and converted that into a layup in a span of 25 seconds as Fremd cut the deficit to 28-22. Another offensive rebound and putback by Kumerow and a basket from Lindsey Helton gave the Storm (14-12) a 32-22 lead with 2 minutes left in the third quarter.

The Vikings scored the final four points of the quarter as South Elgin turned the ball over on its final five possessions.

Hannah Devine made a couple of buckets in the first minute of the fourth quarter as Fremd made it a 34-31 game. The Vikings tied it at 36-36 on a Sam Thelin layup with 4:54 remaining. After a South Elgin turnover, one of eight in the final quarter, Taylor Glassman gave Fremd its first lead since it was 7-6 in the first quarter with an aggressive drive and layup with 4:25 left.

Fremd struggled to put the game away from the free-throw line, going 8-for-16, in the final 4 minutes. It was enough however to earn the Vikings their 10th win in their last 11 games.

"I'm glad we're playing pretty well because we're going to need to (in the postseason)," Yates said.

Glassman led Fremd with 15 points.

Kumerow scored 14 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in the loss.

"She's been playing great the last five or six games, pretty much all season, but really stepping it up now," Prendergast said. "She's being really aggressive offensively and rebounding all over the place."
