Briefs: Senior walk canceled
The Forest Preserve District of Kane County canceled today's Senior Stroll at Hampshire Forest Preserve due to snowy and stormy weather.
St. Charles police honored:
Two St. Charles police officers were honored Monday at a city council meeting. Sgt. Brad Griffin was presented with a city Merit Award for his efforts running the traffic division and heading up special events since 2001. Sgt. Don Shaw was presented with a Life Saving Award for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation Dec. 26 on a woman who was unconscious and not breathing. Police Chief Jim Lamkin praised the officers for their "outstanding service" to the city and police department.
City OKs liquor licenses
St. Charles aldermen approved first-time liquor licenses this week for three local retailers. The licenses are for Aldi, 2670 W. Main St.; Blue Goose Supermarket, 300 S. 2nd St.; and Wal-Mart, 150 Smith Road. Ward 4 Alderman Jim Martin, who supports stricter liquor controls in the city, cast the lone vote against the licenses.
Partnership to give awards
Reservations are being taken through Friday for the Downtown St. Charles Partnership's annual volunteer recognition and awards ceremony. The event is set for 5:30 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St. It is open to partnership members, downtown business owners, partnering organizations and residents interested in the partnership. Test your water
The Kane-DuPage Soil and Water Conservation District is promoting groundwater safety by sponsoring a water testing program. A $45 test kit checks water samples for nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, chloride, sulfate, soluble phosphorus, silica and specific conductivity. Test kits for pesticide and other chemicals are available Feb. 11-22 at the Kane County Farm Bureau on Randall Road in St. Charles and must be turned in by Feb. 25.
