Winter storm socks airports, roads

Hundreds of flights have been canceled or delayed, suburban schools closed and community activities canceled, as freezing rain and snow blows through the Chicago area today.

About 700 flights have been canceled at O'Hare Airport, and delays for flights that are taking off are averaging 45 minutes, an airport spokeswoman said.

Midway Airport has canceled 30 flights and is experiencing 30-minute delays.

Illinois Department of Transportation officials warned that roads are slippery, visibility poor and the afternoon commute will be nasty.
