Davoust tops Yagla in GOP primary for Kane Board Dist. 14

Kane County Board member Mark Davoust held off challenger Tina Yagla in the Republican primary for the District 14 seat Tuesday.

With all precincts reporting, Davoust had 59 percent of the unofficial vote, with 1,749 of the 2,933 ballots that were cast. Davoust, 49, of St. Charles, does not have a Democratic challenger in the November election.

He campaigned on his first-term record and his longtime residency in the Tri-Cities. Davoust said he was relieved and grateful for the voters' support. He also said it showed voters approved what the county board has been doing during his term, which includes building a new jail in his district.

"I see this vote tonight as a confirmation of the action we've taken," he said.

Yagla, 36, who moved to Geneva about four years ago, first gained public notice for her work with a group that opposed putting the new Kane County jail at the Judicial Center campus on Route 38 in St. Charles.

Yagla said she was spurred to run for county board because she thought Davoust was not responsive enough to residents of his district.

She also cited concerns about the county board's increased spending the last few years for consultants. Davoust defended the spending on consultants, saying the county lacked the expertise in-house for such projects as building a Stearns Road bridge or the jail.

Yagla congratulated Davoust on Tuesday night and said that she will now concentrate on running her new business.

"And keep on watching the county. That's what I do," said Yagla, an engineer.
