Fog stops Monday Midway flights

Pea-soup fog created hazardous driving conditions and ruined air travel for thousands Monday.

With visibility less than one-quarter of a mile in some areas, Midway International Airport canceled all flights for the day starting around noon, the Chicago Department of Aviation said.

Numerous flights at O'Hare International Airport were still getting off the ground but experienced delays of 90 minutes.

Overall, nearly 1,000 flights were curtailed, with well over 500 cancellations at O'Hare and 475 at Midway.

Fog was expected to be in the region until midnight Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Today's forecast offered more challenges in the way of snow and rain.

The Illinois Department of Transportation urged drivers to take it slow, leave plenty of space between vehicles and look out for pedestrians.

The department of aviation advised travelers to check in with their airlines before leaving for the airport.
