Assessor reappointed

The Ela Township board recently reappointed John Schweda to be township assessor. Schweda was first appointed to the post in absentia Dec. 13. He stepped down from the post in January after the Lake County state's attorney's office investigated and determined there was an irregularity with the appointment. Schweda had not resigned his township trustee post before applying for the assessor's job. Once Schweda agreed to resign as assessor, the state's attorney's office agreed not to file criminal charges against him. Last week, the township board reinterviewed several candidates for the assessor's job, which comes with a $56,367 yearly salary and still determined Schweda was the most qualified. The meeting was monitored by an assistant state's attorney to ensure proper procedure was followed, Ela Township Supervisor Lucy Prouty said. Schweda will serve as assessor until Dec. 31, 2009. The assessor's post will be up for election in spring 2009, but the term starts Jan. 1, 2010.
