Arlington Heights man charged with DUI for sixth time
An Arlington Heights man was arrested and charged with driving under the influence for the sixth time since 1983 after he ran a traffic light on Friday, police said.
Steven N. Salzman, 44, failed several field sobriety tests after running the traffic light at Arlington Heights and Central roads at around 3:30 p.m. on Friday, said Cmdr. Nick Pecora Jr. of the Arlington Heights Police Department.
Salzman was also charged with not having a valid Illinois driver's license. It had been revoked because of prior DUI convictions, police said.
"All six DUI arrests took place here in Illinois," Pecora said. "Salzman has lived in Arlington Heights all his life and has been arrested many times for alcohol-associated criminal acts."
Salzman refused to take a blood-alcohol test at the scene on Friday and was charged with aggravated driving under the influence and aggravated driving with a revoked license. Both charges are felonies, Pecora said.
Friday's arrest marked the 10th time Salzman had been cited for driving with a revoked license, Pecora said.
During the booking process, Salzman required medical attention because of preexisting medical conditions of hypertension and cardiac illness, police said. He was listed in serious condition Monday night at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, hospital officials said.
In total, Salzman's criminal record is 42 pages long, police said. He lives at 433 S. Forrest Ave. in Arlington Heights.
Since 1983, Salzman has been arrested 38 times and convicted 22 of those times for a variety of offenses including battery and disorderly conduct, police said. His sentences ranged from probation to two years in prison, police said.
Most of the arrests took place in Arlington Heights and nearby suburbs.
Salzman's next court appearance will be Feb. 28 at the Rolling Meadows courthouse.
