Why not shorten campaign season?

I know this is wishful thinking, but why can't American candidates run their campaigns like Britain. Each candidate there is allowed six weeks to campaign and all have equal amounts of cash to spend on their ads.

It would spare all of us viewers the nauseating ads we are subjected to for so many months.
