Edwards, Giuliani and the 'early vote'

In an election conversation with friends, the question came up as to what happens to the votes cast for candidates who have withdrawn from the race.

The answer is, they are wasted.

I called the Board of Elections in Chicago, and this was their answer. They cannot be given to a candidate who is still in the race. I wonder if early voting is such a good idea.
