Man shot dead in Elgin club
A 29-year-old Elgin man was gunned down early Sunday during a fight inside the La Movida night club, marking the city's first homicide of 2008, police said.
Derrick L. Bey, of 417 May St., was pronounced dead on the scene. The shooting does not appear to be gang related, police said.
According to reports, Elgin police arrived at the west-side night spot at 840 N. State St., around 2:20 a.m. after receiving calls that a man had been shot and the suspect had been hit by a vehicle nearby on Route 31.
Police said that once the club's security guards took the gun away from the suspect, he fled the scene and was struck by a motorist.
The suspect was taken to Sherman Hospital where he was being treated for non-life threatening injuries under police guard, police said.
Police recovered the gun from La Movida's security team and were interviewing witnesses Sunday.
As of Sunday night, no charges had been filed.
