Man killed in Elgin night club shooting

A 29-year-old Elgin man was gunned down early this morning during a fight inside the La Movida night club, marking the city's first homicide of 2008, police said.

Derrick L. Bey, of 417 May St., was pronounced dead on the scene. The shooting does not appear to be gang related, police said.

According to a news release, Elgin police arrived at the west side night spot, located at 840 N. State St., at around 2:20 a.m., following calls that a subject had been shot and that the suspect had been hit by a vehicle nearby on Route 31. Police say that once the club's security guards took the gun away from the offender, he fled the scene and was struck by a northbound motorist.

The suspect was taken to Sherman Hospital where he was being treated for non-life threatening injuries, under police guard.

Police, who recovered the gun from La Movida's security team, continue to interview witnesses in the case.
