Real action is in Big Hollow
Most of the attention around the Tuesday elections has been focused on the presidential primary.
I think the real action this election is around the approval of a working cash bond for Big Hollow District 38.
The Big Hollow District currently has the largest average class sizes in Lake County and spends the least per student in Lake County. In fact, our district spends over $2,000 less per student than the state average.
These facts clearly show we are not investing in our children's futures and would lead potential property buyers to look elsewhere.
This referendum gives the community the chance to significantly improve this situation at a reasonable cost: approximately $1 per day.
The Big Hollow School District 38 will ask voters to approve issuance of a $10-million working cash bond. Since it is a working cash bond instead of an operational rate increase, the district will not see a reduction in general state aid.
Passing this referendum will allow the district to restore class sizes to appropriate levels and restore previously cut programs.
