Proven Romney best for ailing economy

A strong economy means a stronger America. American consumers, homeowners and businesses know it to be a pressing reality.

We must choose a candidate for president who has the experience and stamina to tackle the challenges facing the American economy. That candidate is Mitt Romney.

Given the financial predicament facing our state, Illinois voters can appreciate what Romney accomplished as governor of Massachusetts.

That state had slipped into true crisis, harboring a nearly $3 billion deficit. Drawing on his past successes in business and as CEO of the 2002 Olympic Games, Romney developed a pro-growth strategy to eliminate every dollar of deficit without raising taxes and without borrowing against the state's future.

Now he looks to bring those same economic principles to Washington. The Romney plan returns dollars to American taxpayers and seeks to end further increases in the spending of a bloated government bureaucracy.

To provide short-term taxpayer relief and stimulate the economy, Romney proposes lowering taxes on individual citizens, helping homeowners through the current housing crisis, and reducing taxes for businesses.

He would deliver relief for individual taxpayers by permanently reducing the lowest income tax bracket, eliminating payroll taxes on seniors, and making middle-class savings tax free.

For homeowners, the Federal Housing Administration loan portfolio limits would be reformed to allow homeowners to obtain larger loans. Finally, for businesses his plan offers a permanent reduction to the corporate tax rate and immediate 100 percent expensing of equipment for two years.

Immediate action to restore economic stability is critical, but must be accompanied by a long-term strategy for sustainable growth. His plan includes making permanent the president's tax cuts, lowering all tax rates and eliminating the death tax, which burdens small business owners and farmers.

As one who worked with state budgets while a state senator for nearly 15 years, I appreciate the economic principles behind his proposals.

Mitt Romney has a track record of success. When he talks about delivering tax relief, creating good jobs and growing the economy, he carries the credibility of having done it before.

Vote for Romney in Tuesday's Republican primary.
