Robbers lock two in Gurnee Burger King cooler
Gurnee police continue to investigate an armed robbery that occurred early Thursday at a fast-food restaurant east of Grand Avenue and the Tri-State Tollway.
Police said no injuries resulted from the robbery at Burger King, 5300 Grand Ave., across from Six Flags Great America. The incident happened when the eatery was closing.
Three masked men entered the Burger King about 12:10 a.m. Thursday, said police Cmdr. Jay Patrick.
The trio locked a man in a cooler who had been at the restaurant waiting for a female employee.
The woman was then escorted at gunpoint to an office and told to open a safe. After she placed cash in a bag, the woman also was locked in the walk-in cooler.
One of the suspects bolted through a rear door, tripping an alarm in the process. Police said the other two escaped through the main entrance fronting Grand Avenue.
Patrick said the suspects, believed to be in their 20s, stole an amount of cash that was not specified by Burger King management.
Two of the robbers displayed black handguns.
