Briefs: City joins anti-DUI program

The Elgin Police Department has joined the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists' Drunk Busters program, which began in 1990 and recently expanded to Kane County. It pays $100 to motorists who report impaired drivers to the police. Since its inception, more than 2,000 awards have been issued. In Elgin, people are asked to call the department at (847) 289-2700 or 911 if there is an obvious threat of injury. Tipsters must provide a description of the vehicle, a plate number and location. Tipsters must follow up the next day with the department to find out if their information prompted an arrest.

Hotline for voting problems

Kane County voters who observe or experience voting problems or irregularities during Tuesday's primary election again will be able to report them to the Kane County state's attorney's office. The election complaint line, established by Kane County State's Attorney John Barsanti, will be available from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at (630) 208-5328. Anyone who experiences or witnesses any possible illegal election activity, such as electioneering, illegally placed campaign signs or denial of voting rights at any of the county's 223 voting precincts should call. Assistant state's attorneys will take the complaints about potential violations of Illinois election laws and are prepared to travel to polling places to ensure compliance with state election laws. This hotline is not for election questions, such as polling times and places. Those questions should be addressed to the Kane County clerk's election help line at (630) 232-5990.
