Bill Clinton betrays his real feelings

Just over a week ago our nation remembered Martin Luther King Jr. who dreamed of a nation in which people would not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

We have made progress toward that worthy goal. However, the Democratic Party primary process is revealing there is still work to do.

Bill Clinton's comment that "he expects blacks to vote for Barack Obama and women to vote for Hillary … " betrays a subtle but still pervasive tendency to view people based on race and gender instead of character.

Clinton apparently does not trust voters of his party to make their choices based on well-reasoned evaluations of the candidates' stands on the issues, character and experience but expects them to vote based on their racial or gender identities.

If he's right, Democrats are far from evaluating people on the basis of their character and qualifications. If he's wrong, he is betraying his view of people as first members of a race or gender and only second as individuals.

Either way, it's illuminating.
