Teen accused of stabbing teacher now charged with child sex assault

The list of problems keeps growing for a 16-year-old Elgin High School student accused of stabbing his teacher last week.

A Kane County grand jury Friday afternoon returned an indictment against Angel Facio. Authorities allege he sexually assaulted and molested an 8-year-old girl in August.

Kane County State's Attorney John Barsanti said a judge set his bond at $10,000 and the next step was to serve him with a warrant.

"He was automatically transferred (to adult court) due to the nature of the charge," Barsanti said.

Facio is charged with six counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and one count of criminal sexual assault.

The aggravated criminal sexual assault charge is the most serious of the charges and carries six to 30 years in prison upon conviction with no option for probation.

The nine charges stem from one incident at the girl's Elgin home.

Barsanti declined to comment on how Facio knew the girl.

Facio previously was charged as a juvenile with attempted murder in the stabbing of his former family and consumer science teacher, Carolyn Gilbert, on Jan. 18.

He had not been named by this newspaper because he was charged as a juvenile.

Cook County prosecutors say Gilbert was stabbed in her empty classroom at the school after an 11 a.m. early dismissal from semester exams.

Prosecutors say Facio ran up from behind Gilbert, threw a coat over her and began stabbing her in the head and neck with a steak knife.

The 50-year-old Bloomingdale woman was rescued by a colleague and hospitalized for two days before losing vision in one eye.

According to prosecutors, she likely will lose her left eye.

A Cook County judge has not ruled on whether Facio should be tried as an adult in the attack.

If adjudicated as a juvenile, the longest Facio could remain behind bars is until he is 21. If tried as an adult, he could be in prison well beyond that.

Facio is being held at the Cook County juvenile detention center.

Lori Chassee, executive director of the Kane County Child Advocacy Center, which investigates child abuse allegations, declined to comment Friday.
