Using race card as an easy way out

Playing the race card toward anyone who speaks out against illegal aliens seems to be the easy way out for bleeding hearts like John Dalton.

Dalton's letter makes me wonder. Here's a lawyer who, I'm sure, took an oath to uphold the laws of this country yet he speaks out in defense of those breaking the law.

Dalton talks about "illegal" immigrants that were here a generation ago who spoke their native language in various neighborhoods like Little Italy or Chinatown.

As the grandson of an Italian immigrant, I can tell you my grandmother's family came here also to find a better way of life. One difference, they melded into the social fabric of the country. They learned English because they were in America. They fought for this country so that people like Dalton would have the freedom to write letters like these. They were proud to call themselves Americans.

And my grandmother's family didn't sneak in the back door. They walked in through Ellis Island and said, "We're here." They proudly gave their name and said where they were from.

They worked hard in arguably the greatest industrial revolution in the history of the modern world, one that gave birth to the middle class and labor unions that fought for a better standard of living for virtually all of us.

Keep fighting, AFLA!
