Endorsement: St. Charles Park District referendum

The St. Charles Park District has been pointing toward a referendum for some time. Years ago it anticipated the need for a second pool at Campton Hills Park, and any number of residents on the west side of town have thought the same after driving across town to a crowded Pottawatomie Pool.

The Campton Hills pool, which will cost $10 million, is only part of the $25 million request. Once that pool is built, the infrastructure of Pottawatomie Pool, which was built in the 1930s, would be renovated at a cost of $6 million.

There is also $4 million for an environmental education center at Campton, $2 million for the acquisition of open space and about $2 million for improvements at various parks, including about $1 million for athletic facilities alone.

We recommend a "yes" vote, as the park district has put together an impressive plan that adds needed amenities for a reasonable price. For the owner of a $300,000 home, the park district tax would increase by about $45 a year.
