Elgin brother, sister die in Huntley crash

Two Elgin siblings were killed Thursday when the car they were riding in was broadsided by a dairy truck in Huntley, authorities said.

The crash happened about 2:30 p.m. on Route 47, near an entrance to Sun City.

The car's driver, Sergio Espinosa, 52, died at the scene. His sister and only passenger, Rosalinda Rodriguez, 57, was pronounced dead at Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, officials said. Autopsies are scheduled for today.

According to Huntley police, Espinosa was driving west onto Route 47 from Oak Creek Parkway when his 2004 Hyundai was struck on the driver's side by a northbound semitrailer dairy truck. The vehicles came to rest in the grassy median, with the car wedged partly under the truck, Huntley Deputy Police Chief Todd Fulton said.

Rodriguez had to be cut free from the wreckage. The truck driver, Gustavo Gomez, 45, of Darien, was not injured, police said.

On Thursday night, authorities still were trying to determine who had the right of way at the time of the crash and other unknowns. No citations had been issued. The four-way intersection has a traffic light.

"It's going to be under investigation for a few days," Fulton said. "We have a lot of witnesses to talk to yet, and we're still talking to the driver of the truck."

Oak Creek Parkway becomes Del Webb Boulevard west of Route 47, at an entrance to Sun City.

The crash shut down northbound highway lanes in that area for more than five hours while police investigated, officials said.
