Briefs: Preserve the preserves

Volunteers are needed for restoration work from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Bliss Woods Forest Preserve on Bliss Road about one-half mile northeast of Route 47 near Sugar Grove. Volunteers will cut and stack buckthorn and honeysuckle, two invasive plant species. Dress in clothing layers and bring work gloves and handsaws or loppers, if possible. Refreshments will be served. Try making Mexican

Learn to make authentic Mexican food at 2 p.m. Sunday at El Taco Grande-West, 1890 Mill St., Batavia. Participants will learn how to make fresh salsa and bistek ala Mexicana. Instructor is Joe Martinez. Registration fee is $25. Call (630) 406-6490.

Closures set for Kirk Road:

Parts of Kirk Road, between Foxfield and Dukane drives in St. Charles, will be closed for electric work starting Monday. Lane closures will be isolated to small areas where crews must access manholes, officials said. Daily lane closures are expected to take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for two weeks. Tan salon opens Tuesday

Super party, super free:

Be a weather watcher:

Weather watchers can get training to become a volunteer weather observer Feb. 25 at the Kane County Extension Office of the University of Illinois, 535 S. Randall Road, St. Charles. The weather-tracking program is being coordinated by the Illinois State Water Survey and the National Weather Service. The training session, set for 7 p.m., is free to attend, but participants should register in advance. Those who go on to become volunteers will need approximately $25 in supplies. Call (815) 397-7714.
