Masked men rob Subway in Gurnee

Gurnee police are searching for two men who held up a Subway sandwich shop early Wednesday morning.

Police said the men entered the Subway at 5350 Grand Ave. wearing black ski masks at 8:24 a.m.

They displayed a handgun and told the female employee to open the register, Gurnee police Cmdr. Jay Patrick said.

"They assumed she would have money in the register, but because she was just opening up the store, she didn't," he said. "So, they told her to open the safe and took the money from there."

Patrick would not say how much money was taken.

The employee was told to go into the cooler and not to come out. After the cooler door was shut, Patrick said, the suspects fled.

After an undisclosed amount of time, the employee left the cooler, ran to a neighboring cleaners and called police.

Patrick said Waukegan police were called in with a K-9 unit to help track the men. He said it's believed they headed north on foot.

Patrick said both suspects are between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall with slim builds.

The first suspect was wearing a black jacket with a gray hooded sweatshirt and dark jeans, while the second suspect was wearing a gray sweatshirt, dark jeans and athletic shoes.
