Register for programs at the adult reference desk or call the library. Patrons must register in person for programs requiring a fee. Programs may be canceled due to lack of registration.
Those requiring special accommodations to attend any library programs should contact community services two weeks in advance.
Storage Overstock Sale: The Friends of Lake Villa District Library will hold a storage overstock sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in Meeting Room A. The sale will include books and audio-visual items.
Mardi Gras silent auction: The Lake Villa District Library Foundation second annual Mardi Gras Silent Auction will run Sunday to Feb. 2.
Help the Lake Villa District Library Foundation bring a Samsung 40-inch Display Monitor with MagicNet software to the library. The display board will be used for library programs, the meeting room calendar and community events.
The auction will open at 1 p.m. Sunday and close at 4 p.m. on Feb. 2.
Read to Feed: Children 3 years old though sixth grade can read for charity during the library's winter reading program, Read to Feed, through Jan. 31. Tally reading time on reading logs available at the youth services desk, and the library will donate up to $5 per child to Heifer International.
For 60 years, this organization has provided a living loan of an animal along with the training to take care of it to impoverished families around the world. Help buy a cow, a goat, a sheep or even a water buffalo.
Midway Ramblers: The Midway Ramblers will perform Cajun music, Zydeco and Louisiana blues at 2 p.m. Feb. 2. All are welcome to attend.
Lakes Literary League: All writers, published or not, are encouraged to attend at 7 p.m. Feb. 7 and March 6. Those with writing to share are encouraged to bring it. Drop-off and pick up copies of writing at the Adult Reference Desk.
Friday Fun Faire: Three-year-olds through kindergartners can enjoy a story and make a craft. Adult supervision is required.

Adult Book Discussion: The Adult Book Discussion meets at 10 a.m. the second Saturday of each month in the library's Wilton Room. Books are available at the circulation desk the month before the discussion. Refreshments are served, and new members or visitors are always welcome.
On Feb. 9, the group will discuss "Black Girl, White Girl: a Novel" by Joyce Carol Oates. The book is the story of a woman who begins an unofficial inquiry into he death of her former roommate -- an African-American scholarship student at an exclusive, mostly white college -- under mysterious circumstances 15 years earlier.
Music of the Hills: Loose Change & Friends will perform "Music of the Hills" at Lake Villa District Library at 2 p.m. on Feb. 10. Enjoy a unique program of live Appalachian old-time songs and instrumentals played while images of Appalachian history and scenery are projected. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.
Board meetings: The regular meetings of the board of trustees of the Lake Villa District Library for the rest of fiscal year 2007-08 are as follows:

Cooking for One or Two: Lynette Marsh, U of I Extension Nutrition and Wellness Educator, will provide ideas and suggestions for meal preparation for couples, singles or anyone who no longer needs to cook for a crowd at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 13. Attendees will be eligible to win a copy of the cookbook, "Just the Two of Us." Funding for this program was awarded under the Library Services and Technology Act.
Internet for Beginners: Internet for Beginners will begin at 1 p.m. Feb. 13 or March 12. Join an enjoyable and instructive lesson on basic Internet searching. Register at the adult reference desk or by calling (847) 356-7711.
Yoga, Tea & Chocolate: Start the workshop at 7 p.m. Feb. 14 with an energizing tea before moving into an alignment-based chair yoga practice. Finish the session with two more calming teas and tea-infused chocolates.. Appropriate for adults of all ages; wear comfortable clothing. Registration is limited to 40.
The Write Stuff: Third- through sixth-graders are invited to join this group the third Saturday of each month for a series of hour-long creative writing workshops.
The group will explore different kinds of writing throughout the year, with the goal of creating a literary magazine.
• Registration is under way for "In the Beginning ..." Learn how to start stories with a bang, at 1 p.m. Feb. 16.
• Registration begins Feb. 16 for "And They Lived Happily Ever After ...?" Discuss how to write the perfect ending at 1 p.m. March 15.
• Registration begins March 15 for "Games Writers Play: Fun games to spark your creativity" at 1 p.m. April 19.
• The library has received submissions and has begun to put together its first edition of "The Write Stuff" Literary Magazine. To be published early this year, the magazine will include work from participants in The Write Stuff creative writing workshops and a limited number of "at-large" authors in third through sixth grade. Ask for information at the youth services reference desk.
Special performers: These programs are free and fill quickly. Tickets are required for all adults and their accompanying children 2 years old and older.
Tickets can be acquired either in person at the youth services desk or in limited numbers, online beginning 10 a.m. the day of registration.

• George Washington Follies will begin at 1 p.m. Feb. 18. With the help of audience members and famous leaders of long ago, George Washington decides how to lead the new country known as the United States of America.
Novel Thoughts: Fourth- to sixth-graders can read books and join a discussion at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month in the Conference Room.

• April 16: "The Homework Machine" by Dan Gutman
Royalty and genealogy: Join Jeff Bockman for "I Cannot Tell a Lie, I Chopped Down My Royal Family Tree," an overview on how to use Royalty Sources from both a genealogical and historical perspective at 1 p.m. Feb. 21. He'll also discuss using history, timelines, evaluation of sources and personal ethics.
Recipes to Die For: Chef Jonathan Bean will present a look at how to make dishes featured in several mystery novels at Lake Villa District Library at 2 p.m. Feb. 24. The recipes will include creamy fish chowder from "The Body in the Basement" by Katherine Hall Page; Thai beef salad from "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Crime" by Tamar Myers; Chinese beef stir fry from "The Cereal Murders" by Diane Mott Davidson; and flan from "Custard's Last Stand: a Pennsylvania Dutch Mystery with Recipes" by Tamar Myers.
All of the recipes are adaptations of what is found in the books. This program will cost $3 per person and it is not necessary to be a current Friends' member to attend. Register at the Adult Reference Desk beginning Feb. 1. Registration is limited to 50.
Youth Services Storytime: Registration for spring storytimes will begin March 3. All programs except the Wednesday night Family Drop-In require registration, which can be done in person or over the phone. Please register only your family.
• Storytime for 3-year-olds and a caregiver: 7 p.m. Mondays, April 7 to May 12; 1 p.m. Tuesdays, April 8 to May 13; 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays, April 9 to May 14; and 9:30 a.m. Thursdays, April 10 to May 15.
• Storytime for 4- and 5-year-olds: 1 p.m. Mondays, April 7 to May 12; 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays, April 8 to May 13; 9:30 a.m. Wednesdays, April 9 to May 14; 7 p.m. Thursdays, April 10 to May 15.
• Family Storytime: Register up to three children from one family between 2-years-old and kindergarten. 10:30 a.m. Mondays, April 7 to May 12; 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays, April 8 to May 13; 1 p.m. Thursdays, April 10 to May 15.
• Family Drop In Storytime: 7 p.m. Wednesdays, April 9 to May 14.
Little Listeners: These programs are intended to coach parents and caregivers in supporting the skills needed for children to acquire language through the use of rhymes, stories and language-building activities.
Little Listeners is designed for one-on-one interaction between child and adult partner; no other siblings are allowed. Registration begins Feb. 1. Children must be the proper age by March 4.
• Little Listeners A: For ages 3 to 17 months: 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays, March 4 to 25; 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, March 5 to 26; 1:30 p.m. Thursdays, March 6 to 27.
• Little Listeners B: For ages 15 to 28 months: 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays, March 4 to 25; 9:30 a.m. Wednesdays, March 5 to 26; 6:30 p.m. Thursdays March 6 to 27.
• Little Listeners C: For ages 2 to 3 years: 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, March 4 to 25; 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays, March 5 to 26; 9:30 a.m. Thursdays, March 6 to 27.
Lewis and Clark's River: "Life on Lewis and Clark's River" is a slide presentation by John Lynn that covers the same journey the Lewis & Clark Expedition made 200 years ago: 740 miles of the scenic and historic Upper Missouri River by canoe from its source at Three Forks, Montana to its confluence with the Yellowstone River. At 11:30 a.m. March 12.
Wednesday Afternoon Club: All first-, second- and third-graders are invited to join the club to hear stories, laugh and be creative while sharing books, poems, riddles and jokes. From 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays April 9 through May 14.
