Hoffman Estates firefighters rescue driver from frozen pond
A woman was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries after driving her car into an icy pond in Hoffman Estates Tuesday.
Police said the woman was driving through a parking lot near Hassell and Barrington roads at about 5:45 p.m. when she lost control of the car, rode down an embankment and onto the pond.
The woman drove about 75 yards on the ice, presumably trying to get off of it, before the ice broke and the car started to sink, said Hoffman Estates Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Bosco.
The car, Bosco said, sunk into about 2 feet of water near the ponds shore.
Hoffman Estates firefighters were forced to brave the frigid waters to free the woman from her car.
She was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center, Bosco said.
Hoffman Estates Sgt. Jim Campbell said the driver, who was not identified, will not face charges or citations in the incident.
