Notes: Woods is making his first start of the year. The Buick endorser grew up in Cypress, 80 miles north of Torrey Pines. He will play the Dubai Desert Classic next week. … Phil Mickelson won his hometown tournament in 1993, 2000 and 2001. He's also making his first start of the year. … John Daly won the 2004 tournament, beating Luke Donald and Chris Riley on the first hole of a playoff. Daly hit a 100-foot bunker shot to 4 inches to set up his winning birdie. … The final two rounds will be played on the South Course, site of the U.S. Open in June.

Last year: Fred Funk had the most-lopsided victory ever in a 54-hole Champions Tour event, finishing with consecutive 8-under 64s for an 11-stroke win. The 50-year-old Funk had a tournament-record 23-under 193 total.
Last week: Funk won the season-opening MasterCard Championship, birdieing the final two holes for a 7-under 65 and a 2-stroke victory over Allen Doyle.
Notes: Hale Irwin won the 2005 tournament to become the first player to win a PGA Tour-sanctioned event five straight times. He has six overall victories in the event.

Notes: Goosen tops the field along with American Scott Verplank, Englishmen Westwood, Luke Doland, Paul Casey and Ian Poulter, Australia's Adam Scott, Spain's Sergio Garcia and Scotland's Colin Montgomerie. … Qatar, a little smaller than Connecticut, is on an oil-rich Persian Gulf peninsula off eastern Saudi Arabia.
