South Elgin couple killed in crash victims of ice

A South Elgin couple was killed late Monday after snow and ice caused a three-vehicle crash in Batavia, sending another motorist to a local hospital, authorities said.

Ruben and Elisa Lacsam died from injuries suffered after their 2004 Toyota Camry crashed at 9 p.m. on Randall Road, about a half-mile south of Main Street, police said.

Elisa Lacsam, 70, the driver of the car, died at the scene. Ruben, 71, died at Provena Mercy Center in Aurora.

The Camry was headed north on Randall when it lost control on the icy pavement and crossed the median, hitting a 2001 Chrysler Sebring and 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck, police said.

"Road conditions played a major role in this one," Batavia police Cmdr. Gregory Thrun said. "It was very slippery, and road conditions were extremely poor."

A woman who answered the phone Tuesday at the Lacsams' South Elgin townhouse said she was the couple's only child but was too upset to talk about her parents.

"I just found out. I'm the only one left," she said.

The driver of the Sebring, Felix Velazquez, 29, of North Aurora, and a young female passenger were taken to Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva for treatment, police said.

Velazquez remained hospitalized Tuesday in fair condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Citing federal privacy laws, the Delnor official was unable discuss the condition of the female passenger.

The three occupants of the Dodge Ram -- a North Aurora man and woman and a Chicago man -- were not injured, police said.

Autopsies on the Lacsams are set for today, the Kane County coroner's office said.

Both lanes on Randall Road were closed while rescuers and investigators responded to the crash.
