Kaneland snaps 4-game skid
Kaneland girls basketball coach Ernie Colombe and the rest of the coaching staff said before Tuesday's game if Katie Hatch records a double-double against Yorkville, they would buy the team dinner.
Looks like the Knights are getting dessert as well.
Hatch, a junior forward, not only got her double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds, but she added 5 assists and 3 steals in the 65-55 Western Sun Conference win in Maple Park.
"She stepped up tonight," Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said of Hatch, a three-year varsity player. "She's been playing great. She's just stepping up. She's had some big games for us throughout the year and is really becoming one of our leaders. It's good to see."
The win snapped a 4-game losing streak and improved the Knights to 7-15 overall, 2-9 in the conference.
"It feels really good because the last few games, we've lost by a few points," Hatch said. "We came together as a team and won."
Hatch scored 6 of her points in the fourth quarter, when the Knights outscored the Foxes 20-4.
Entering the fourth quarter, Yorkville (6-14, 2-8) led 53-45. Lesley Winslow then produced back-to-back buckets before the Foxes scored their last field goal of the game with 6:30 left to play.
After that, the Knights capped the game on a 16-0 run, led by 5 different players.
"It was exciting," Winslow said. "Our shots were falling and we were working together."
"That was very good, considering the first half wasn't that great," Hatch added. "(The Foxes) were on fire. We were thinking, 'We better get back in this game. We have to get this win and pull through.'"
Yorkville had the momentum in the first half, as it led by as much as 29-19 with 3:25 left in the first half.
The Knights, however, finished the second quarter scoring the last 6 points. The run continued into the third quarter, and by the time they were done, their 12-0 run brought them within 35-33 after Brittney Hankes' basket at the 5:42 mark in the third.
The Foxes tied the game at 47 and had the lead until Kaneland's fourth quarter run.
In addition to Hatch, Kaneland was led by Winslow and Hankes, who each finished with 11 points.
