Suspected chlorine leak at Elmhurst hotel, waterpark sickens 20

Twenty people were sent to area hospitals this afternoon following a suspected chlorine leak at the Holiday Inn on York Road in Elmhurst.

Paramedics and firefighters were called to the hotel, which includes the Mayan Adventure Waterpark, just after 1:30 p.m. At least 16 ambulances were on site, according to witnesses.

Almost of the victims were treated and released from five area hospitals, officials said.

The source of the chemical exposure was a zero-gravity pool used primarily by children.

Emergency responders sought assistance from at least a dozen surrounding fire departments.
