Wolves score 5 straight goals on way to win; 2 goals for Krog

The Wolves reeled off 5 straight goals to bury an early 1-goal deficit and down the Manchester Monarchs 5-2 in front of a season-high 12,022 Saturday night at the Allstate Arena.

Center Jason Krog, the AHL's leading scorer, had 2 goals for the Wolves to become the second Chicago player to hit the 20-goal mark this season. The 32-year-old forward has collected 60 points in 41 games.

Forwards Alexandre Giroux (2 assists) and Steve Martins (goal, assist) and defenseman Brian Fahey (goal, assist) also posted multiple points for the Wolves, while rookie center Brian Boyle scored twice for Manchester.

"We didn't have the first period we wanted tonight, but we came out in the second period with a better work ethic," Martins said. "The power-play goal that put us up 2-1 was huge, and from then on Robbie (Gherson) was great between the pipes."

Gherson (4-4-0) stopped 29 shots to pick up his first victory since Nov. 21.

After falling behind 1-0 in the opening 20 minutes, the Wolves wasted no time firing back after the first intermission. Defenseman Nathan Oystrick ripped a long blast past Monarchs goalie Erik Ersberg just 29 seconds into the middle period to even the score.

The Wolves used a power-play opportunity to get in front for the first time with 44 seconds remaining in the second period. They cycled the puck from defenseman Karel Pilar high in the slot, down to Giroux just right of the Monarchs' net.

Giroux fired the puck across the zone through a crowd of defenders out to a free Krog in the left circle. Krog collected the puck and banged it home for his 19th of the year.

Krog scored at 5:19 of the third period to put the Wolves ahead 3-1. Martins pushed the lead to 3 with the second Wolves power-play goal when he redirected a pass from Jesse Schultz past Ersberg at 12:54 of the third period.
