Briefs: Police probe incident
Aurora police are investigating an apparent attempted child abduction that occurred about 8:50 a.m. Thursday on the city's west side. Police said an 11-year-old girl was walking west on the 900 block of Charles Street when she was approached by a man driving a newer, green, four-door car with three thin white stripes on the side. The man talked to the girl and eventually asked her if she was getting in the car. The girl said the man followed her all the way to Jefferson Middle School on the 1100 block of Plum Street. When the girl got close to the school, she ran inside to report the incident to school officials. The suspect is described as 25 to 30 years old, of average size, with short black hair. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (630) 859-1700 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000. Callers to Crime Stoppers may remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.
Christmas in Lombard
Lombard is taking a page out of the White House's holiday decorating handbook. Just as First Lady Laura Bush recently sent out plain ornaments to the national parks to be decorated and returned to be displayed on the White House Christmas tree, Lombard has plain lilac and plain silver ornaments. Individuals, families, businesses, groups or organizations can decorate and personalize the ornaments to be used for the 2008 Village Hall Christmas tree. The village is launching the initiative, led by communications coordinator Joelyn Kott, now because the holidays are a busy time and officials want a broad representation of the community. For more information, contact Kott at kottj@villageoflombard.org or contact her at 630-620-5718.
Better lights in Lombard
Starting next week, a contractor working for Lombard will install state-of-the-art equipment at all the village-owned traffic signals on Westmore-Meyers Road between Roosevelt and St. Charles roads. The work will take three to four weeks to complete. The signals now use timers, but when the upgrades are added all the signals will be interconnected. Some miscellaneous work remaining on the road project, such as pavement striping, will be done in the spring. Questions should be directed to public works officials at 630-620-5740.
