Briefs: Give the gift of music

The Lake Zurich High School jazz lab band will participate in the New Trier Jazz Festival at New Trier High School starting 8 a.m. Feb. 9. This year's festival supports the Tipitinas Foundation, which collects musical instruments to replace the thousands that were lost in Hurricane Katrina. Instruments may be dropped off at Lake Zurich High School's main office before Feb. 9. Lindenfest band call

Organizers of Lindenfest are accepting CDs from area bands who want to participate in a Battle of the Bands competition on Aug. 10. Bands may play original or cover music; however, inappropriate language is prohibited, and bands who have participated in the past are ineligible. Interested bands can mail a promo CD to Lindenfest Inc., Attn: Andy Bauschke, 2301 E. Sand Lake Rd., Lindenhurst, IL 60046 by May 31. Eight bands will be chosen from the entries and contacted by phone.

District 103 workshop

Lincolnshire-Prairie View Elementary District 103 will hold a board workshop to discuss the full-day kindergarten program from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23. The workshop will be at Wright Junior High School library, 1370 Riverwoods Road, Lincolnshire. The goal is to learn more about the potential expansion of the full-day kindergarten pilot program under way at Sprague Elementary School, where two full-day kindergarten classrooms are in place. An overview of the current program will be provided.

Local author's poetry show

Children's author and performer Bill Buczinsky of Arlington Heights will present an evening of poetry and song to benefit the charity AboutFace USA. The Frozen Poetry show will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 9 at Gorton Community Center, 400 E. Illinois Road, Lake Forest. AboutFace USA provides support for people with facial differences they are born with or occur from illness or trauma. Buczinsky is the founder of A Child's Voice, which inspires children and adults through poetry workshops, performances, teacher training and corporate appearances.
