Activist to put MLK Day in today's terms
Lombard's Congregation Etz Chaim will honor Martin Luther King Jr. Sunday when a community organizer will discuss present-day equal rights issues.
Jorge Mujica, one of the lead organizers for the March 10, 2007, protest in Chicago, will talk about Immigration and Civil Rights at 9:30 a.m. About 200 people are expected to attend. Mujica also has been a journalist and union organizer.
"It's very important that we make our congregates and our children learn about what is being done and what needs to be done in conjunction with Martin Luther King and his fight for equality," Etz Chaim Administrator Carol Meyer said.
The congregation does Martin Luther King programs annually. This year the social action committee decided to invite Mujica since he's prominent in the fight for equality and civil rights for non-citizens.
"It's so important to know that there are people in the world who still stand up and fight for what they believe is equality," Meyer said.
She said students often don't grasp the full concept of Martin Luther King's ideas, mainly because so many years have passed.
"Here is a way to say this is what they believe is equality," Meyer said. "This is still prominent in our society, and there are people who are not afraid to stand up and fight for what they believe in."
