Marquette cold as ice, falls by 20 to Louisville
Marquette couldn't buy a bucket Thursday night against Louisville.
The Cardinals held visiting Marquette (13-3, 3-2 Big East) to 30 percent shooting by extending their zone defense to cut off passing lanes and close off the middle. When the Golden Eagles tried to shoot over the top, they failed miserably.
Marquette missed all 12 of its 3-point attempts in a 71-51 setback to Louisiville, the first time it has been held without a 3-pointer since a loss to Wisconsin on Dec. 23, 2000.
"You can't settle for jump shots against good defense," Marquette coach Tom Crean said. "We played right into their hands. We wanted to attack their defense and get open shots or kick it for open 3s. We didn't attack well."
Jerel McNeal led the Golden Eagles with 16 points and Wesley Matthews had 14, but star guard Dominic James scored a season-low 3 points before reaggravating a right-wrist injury with just more than six minutes remaining after being fouled by David Padgett (8-for-9 on field goals). He is expected to play Sunday when the Golden Eagles travel to Connecticut.
"You never imagine (shutting James down) because he's such a great player," Smith said. "He just had an off night. … We wanted to stop them from 3. When they did get it up, we were able to get a hand up."
The rivalry has been marked by thrillers over the last decade, with 14 of the last 22 meetings being decided by 5 points or less or in overtime.
There was no such drama this time.
Louisville took the lead two minutes in, using its size to power past Marquette's guard-heavy lineup. Looking inside to Padgett and Derrick Caracter on offense and extending the zone on defense, Louisville played with the kind of efficiency coach Rick Pitino preached would come once the Cardinals (13-4, 3-1) finally got healthy.
"We are still not where we need to be, but we played a great game tonight," Pitino said. "In another two weeks we're going to be really good."
Terrence Williams led Louisville with 20 points.
Cleveland St. 56, Butler 52: Cedric Jackson scored 14 points as host Cleveland State, a program in disarray for most of the past 20 years, stunned No. 12 Butler (16-2, 5-2 Horizon League) for the Vikings' first regular-season win over an AP Top 25 team.
J'Nathan Bullock added 14 points, the last one coming on a free throw with 2.6 seconds left for Cleveland State (13-5, 6-0), whose students stormed the floor after the final horn.
Tennessee 80, Vanderbilt 60: Wayne Chism scored a season-high 18 points and had a career-high 18 rebounds to help No. 6 Tennessee defeat No. 16 Vanderbilt in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Volunteers (15-1, 3-0 SEC) were 8-for-22 on 3s, while the Commodores (16-2, 1-2) completed only 3 of their 21 attempts.
Indiana 65, Minnesota 60: The Indiana Hoosiers are so much more than Eric Gordon.
D.J. White had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Lance Stemler hit a crucial 3-pointer to lift the ninth-ranked Hoosiers (15-1, 4-0 Big Ten) to a victory over host Minnesota (12-4, 2-2).
On a night when their super freshman struggled in all areas, Gordon's supporting cast came up huge to extend Indiana's winning streak to 11 games, their longest since a 13-game streak in 1992-93.
Wright St. 76, UIC 75: Vaughn Duggins scored a team-high 19 points to help Wright State hold on for a win over Illinois-Chicago at the UIC Pavilion.
Todd Brown's 3-pointer with 12 seconds left built a 76-72 lead for Wright State (10-6, 3-4 Horizon League).
Josh Mayo led UIC with 21 points (9-8, 3-3). Karl White Jr. scored 20 points and Tori Boyd chipped in 11.
Centenary 95, W. Illinois 88: James Washington, who came off the bench for Western Illinois, led all scorers with 28 as the Leathernecks lost to host Centenary. David Nurse, who was 5 of 6 from 3-point range, added 26, while David Jackson had 13 and Jerryck Owens-Murrey had 12 for WIU.
Tennessee Tech 74, EIU 57: Jon'Tee Willhite scored 17 points for Eastern Illinois (2-15, 1-8 OVC) in a loss at Tennessee Tech.
