Child killed in fire
A fire Wednesday at a home-based day-care center in Chicago killed a 2-year-old boy, but several other children and a woman escaped. No working smoke detectors were found in the house after the morning fire. Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said smoke prevented the day-care operator from returning to rescue the child. He said the fire started in the basement of Porter's Day Care and spread quickly. Firefighters found the boy under some clothing in a first-floor closet. A battalion chief was taken to St. Francis Hospital and Health Center in Blue Island suffering minor smoke inhalation.
