Adults get chance to showcase their talents in Buffalo Grove

Teens do it; kids do it. Now, adults can do it.

It is showing off your talents at the first "Talkin' About my Generation: Limelight Café -- All Grown Up."

The brainchild of Buffalo Grove Fine Arts Commissioner and BG Singers member Gayle Pervos, adults in and around Buffalo Grove are invited to sign up now for the talent evening Jan. 26.

Pervos said the teenage talent shows have been a big hit.

"The informality of our teen program was why it was so successful," she said.

"They came out and had a good time, with no advance preparation."

The variety shows are modeled loosely on her own experiences growing up near the Bernard Horwich Jewish Community Center on Touhy Avenue in Chicago. At 16, she attended informal gatherings where teens took to the stage and where everyone was comfortable no matter what he or she chose to perform.

Now 53, she looks back fondly.

"Everything we do today is so formal and everyone has such busy schedules," she said. "Kids have dance or music lessons, organized sports and competitions; adults put in hours at work and rehearsing for more formal groups.

"We wanted to offer them a less formal option."

With the first adult program, Pervos said, organizers hope to duplicate the same supportive atmosphere of the teen program.

So far, they have an acoustic guitarist, a clarinet piano duo, a juggler and husband/wife singers signed up.

She urges everyone to haul out their long-forgotten instruments, practice a few scales and songs and get into the spotlight.

"We want the word to get around," she added.

The evening will not require any rehearsals. There will be sweets and beverages available.

"Right now, we want to offer this once a year, but after we analyze who comes out and who is interested, we might adjust the dates and the seasons," she said. "We'd love to see more seniors."
