Fewer boat buyers at Chicago show
Opening day Wednesday at the 78th annual Chicago Boat, RV & Outdoors Show at McCormick Place was decked out with the usual bells and whistles, including shiny new boats with lavish upholstery and high-tech navigation systems.
Only one thing was missing in abundance -- prospective buyers.
With new boat prices averaging around $13,000, it isn't easy to find buyers like the Hoopses, who traveled to the show in search of their second boat. The couple spends summer leisure time boating with their children on the Chain O' Lakes.
Cheryl Hoops said compared with last year she noticed far fewer people attending the show. Plus, she said, "There is an awful lot of used boats for sale."
Hoops attributed the increase in used-boat offerings in part to the sluggish housing market and high gas prices. But, "I think if people love boating they're going to find a way to do it."
The show runs through Sunday. Hours: Wednesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets are available at www.chicagoboatshow.com.
