Zoo, library honored

First lady Laura Bush paid tribute Monday to 10 cultural institutions, including the Brookfield Zoo and The Newberry Library in Illinois, for their creativity and public service and was then surprised to receive an honor of her own -- an award for her commitment to promoting the nation's libraries. She called the Brookfield Zoo a "living classroom" where students "get to experience the sights, sounds -- and, for better or worse, the smells -- of the animal kingdom." And she credited a huge map collection and 5 million manuscript pages with making The Newberry Library in Chicago a "world-renowned research facility."
