Geneva group home needs work before opening

The house that the Geneva mental health board bought for use as a group home will need $264,000 worth of work before it can open.

The Association for Individual Development, which will run the home at 1980 South St., announced Friday it seeking Kane County Riverboat and Community Development Block Grant money to pay for the work to improve the safety of the building and make it accessible to disabled people.

The two-story home needs an emergency egress system from the second story, a handicapped-accessible bathroom, security system, ramps and to have its basement remodeled into an office and living quarters for the supervisory staff, said Kathy Hazelwood, vice president of marketing and development for AID. The changes are required by city and federal laws.

The home is intended to house five developmentally disabled adults.

Hazelwood hopes to have the Kane County Board vote on the grant requests this spring.

On Jan. 19, the Geneva mental health board will announce the name of the home.

The Geneva mental health board closed on the house Dec. 21 for $399,000. It had saved up tax money for a group home for nearly 18 years.
