Fremd 36, Barrington 32
Barrington and Fremd had one main key on defense that kept Friday night's game close -- traps.
While both sides had their share of offensive struggles, it was the Vikings who found their way out of those traps en route to a 36-32 Mid-Suburban League West win at home.
Although the game would tip in favor of Fremd, it was the Fillies (4-16, 2-4) who opened up with a 6-0 run.
It wouldn't last for long, though, as the Vikings answered back with a 7-0 run to grab the lead after the first quarter.
Fremd (9-9, 3-2) went on to double its first-quarter total, scoring 14 points in the second period to take hold of a 21-14 lead at the break.
The Vikings' defense controlled the boards to support an offense that continued to find its shots as the game progressed.
"Barrington did some things that we didn't attack very well at times but we made some big stops when we needed them," said Fremd coach David Yates.
Junior Sam Thelin appeared in only her second game for Fremd since suffering from a herniated disk, but made her presence felt.
Thelin finished with 8 points, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer at the end of the third quarter.
"I feel like I'm around 95 percent right now but after the opening tip my adrenaline kicks in and I'm ready to go," Thelin said.
The Vikings also received an 8-point contribution from sophomore Taylor Glassman and 5 points apiece from senior Kaitlin Jones and sophomore Gianna Abruzzo.
With three minutes remaining Barrington was still in the mix of things trailing by 1 point.
Sophomore Emily Harris picked up some key rebounds late to go along with her game-high 16 points.
In the end it would be the Vikings free-throw shooting that would seal the victory.
In fact, all 4 of Fremd's fourth quarter points came from the line as Abruzzo sank a pair and Jones and Glassman added 1 apiece.
"It doesn't matter what the records are in the MSL," Yates said. "It's always a rivalry when two teams from this area get together."
Maine West 61, Glenbrook North 52:ΠSenior Brittany Begrowicz scored 17 points and grabbed 5 rebounds for Maine West (14-5, 6-0) in the Central Suburban North contest over visiting Glenbrook North (4-2), whose only two conference losses are to the Warriors.
West also received double figure scoring from Mary Kusner (14 points, 8 rebounds), Erin Baumstark (13 points, two 3-pointers, 5 assists) and Colleen Vana (12 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists).
