O'Hare expansion challenge to be heard by Washington court

Elk Grove Village's fight against new runways at O'Hare International Airport and the removal of a cemetery appears to have new life.

Mayor Craig Johnson said oral arguments will be heard on Feb. 11 before a Washington, D.C. circuit court.

The challenge targets the use of federal dollars for the removal of the 158-year-old St. Johannes Cemetery.

This is one of the lawsuits that O'Hare expansion opponents have lodged in an effort to stop the project.

They say digging up the graves violates federal religious protection laws.

Pick up a shovel or pay: Des Plaines is serious about shoveling.

This week, aldermen approved a new law that will fine those who pile snow onto handicapped parking spaces.

The penalty is a $250 fine.

Spaces on public and private property are affected.

A proposal that would similarly penalize those who fail to shovel sidewalks is still under review.

Expect that to come before the council within a few months, officials say.
