Crews fighting paint spill in Deep Lake

Crews worked this afternoon to prevent a paint spill from expanding in Deep Lake in Lake Villa.

Lake County Health Department spokeswoman Leslie Piotrowski said roughly 10 gallons of oil-based paint were dumped into a creek feeding Deep Lake, near Route 83 and Grand Avenue.

Piotrowski said the health department, as well as Lake Villa's fire and police departments, responded to the spill. She said efforts to contain the paint involved placement of "soaker socks" and silt screens where the creek leads to the lake.

Volatile chemical odors were reported in the Deep Lake area, Piotrowski said, so local residents and others should try to avoid the area.
