Portola loss widens in first quarter

BATAVIA -- Portola Packaging Inc. Thursday reported a net loss of $2.6 million for the first fiscal quarter, compared to a net loss of $2.1 million for the same period last year. It had sales of $72.6 million, compared to $67.4 million for the same period last year, an increase of 7.7 percent. Operating income was $2 million, compared to $3.3 million last year.
