Secular humanists do have beliefs
As a proud secular humanist, I am impressed by the smug certainty of Ed Smetana's pronouncements (Fence Post, Jan. 4). He presents no reasons for his religion, just beliefs. He sounds like a very suggestible man who doesn't like to ask too many questions, especially about religion.
Secular humanists do believe in something, including (but not limited to) salvation in this world, through human effort and virtue. God's no help; we have to do it ourselves. We value human individuality, choice, dignity, and responsibility. To a humanist, Mr. Smetana's religion is "ahumanistic," promoting imaginary deities over people, practicing humiliating worship services, and persecuting and killing those who disagree.
